URC has been awarded the five-year $140 million cooperative agreement – USAID Uganda Health Activity (UHA) – with project start-up scheduled for this month.
UHA builds on the successful implementation of the USAID Regional Health Integration to Enhance Services (RHITES) Activities, scaling up high impact practices across technical areas while incorporating new elements of integration and local ownership.
URC is joined by a strong, locally embedded team of consortium partners – Communication for Development Foundation Uganda, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, FHI 360, Marie Stopes Uganda, Panagora Group, and Youth Alive.
A Legacy of Success Through Ugandan Partnerships
“For nearly 30 years, URC has implemented USAID and other U.S. government-funded projects in Uganda in partnership with the Government of Uganda with stellar performance,” said Augustin Muhwezi, MBChB, MPH, who will serve as Chief of Party of UHA after leading the USAID Regional Health Integration to Enhance Services – East Central Uganda (RHITES-EC) Activity for URC.
“UHA will build on these achievements to support implementation of innovative, evidence-based, high impact interventions that will further improve health service delivery and build a resilient and self-sustaining health system,” Muhwezi said.
URC implements three other U.S. government-funded projects in Uganda – the USAID RHITES-EC and RHITES-N, Acholi Activities and the DoD Uganda URC Project. The USAID Defeat TB Activity was recently transitioned from URC to the Infectious Diseases Institute. This follow-on project is now the USAID Local Partner Health Services (LPHS) TB Activity.
Expanding to Deliver Sustainable Health Service Improvements
We are honored to be selected by USAID to implement this new Activity. UHA will strengthen the Ugandan health system and increase the survival and well-being of vulnerable populations in priority districts. Integrating activities across multiple health sectors, the Activity will:
- Improve access to and use of quality health services at the community and health facility levels;
- Enhance local ownership and leadership for sustainable health outcomes; and
- Strengthen health systems at the regional, district, facility, and community levels.
URC looks forward to harnessing our decades of experience working with the Government of Uganda, USAID, and our many partners in Uganda to continue to improve – and sustain – health outcomes for the people of Uganda.
